On an emergency, the QRV is often first through the gate. It carries the same cardiac monitor, airway equipment, and medications as the ambulance, so treatment can begin while the unit is still on the road. A great many calls end right there — an assessment, a treatment, and a patient who never needed to be moved at all.
It also handles the work an ambulance should not be tied up doing. A paramedic escort to the airport for someone who is unwell but still flying. A run into the city for a specialist appointment with monitoring on board. A member who needs a clinician beside them for a few hours rather than an emergency room. Every one of those handled by the QRV is an ambulance left free for the call that cannot wait.
